Nah, auto-updates were just included with the last update.
Plus gives you an automatic download option for store content.

System changes
* Minor update that adds a security patch.
* System security has been improved, blocking ability to play backups or downgrading firmware.
* Added an Ipla TV channel under [TV] for Poland.
* Downloaded demos are no longer collapsed in a folder.
System changes (for 3.56 reissue)
* Initially caused issues (like in 3.41) when upgrading the hard disk with this firmware on some systems. Semi-fix has been published later. Fix will only work if user still has the original unformatted hard drive. Users who don't have the old hard drive or have formatted it are not able to install system software. These users need to wait for a complete fix to be released or for the 3.60 update which may fix the issue.

Re: PS3 Firmware - downloading it manually
Multiple PS3 owners have run into trouble upgrading their console's hard disk drive since the release of firmware update v3.56 last week.
According to users on multiple forums (via Examiner), the 3.56 firmware prevents more recently released PS3 models (with 16 MB flash) from being upgradeable to a new hard disk drive.
This bug has reared its head in previous PS3 updates too.
The following models are said to have been affected.
Original PS3s:
CECHH
CECHJ
CECHK
CECHL
CECHM
CECHP
CECHQ
Slim PS3s:
CECH-20..A
CECH-20..B
CECH-21..A
CECH-21..B
CECH-250.A
CECH-250.B
CECH-250.A
CECH-250.B
CECH-251.A
CECH-251.B
Officially described as a "security patch" by Sony, firmware update v3.56 is thought to have been designed to shut out hackers after PS3 protection software was completely circumvented last month.
The new firmware was broken within hours, but Call of Duty: Black Ops hackers didn't get off lightly.

Re: PS3 Firmware - downloading it manually
Apparently a "v2" of 3.56 has been released to fix this problem, (according to Dukio.com)
identified by a new MD5 checksum.
I'm with MARSTA-J, using DNS trick to avoid this update.
Something not mentioned in the 'changelog', 3.56 has a hidden rootkit that enables Sony to remote execute code on
your console. Nasty indeed. I'll leave my comments there to "Stay on topic"...

Re: PS3 Firmware - downloading it manually
n Sony's upcoming v3.60 firmware update, which is set to go live tomorrow, PlayStation 3 gamers will finally be able to store their saved games on the "cloud" (Sony's online servers), Sony today announced. Unfortunately, there's a catch: at the present time, you have to be a PlayStation Plus subscriber to make use of this exciting new feature.
PS+ users will be allowed to store up to 150 MB of data — or 1,000 save game files on the cloud, whichever comes first — on the cloud. Gamers who store their data on the cloud can access it from any PS3 by using their unique PlayStation Network log-in, which means no more starting from scratch when you bring your games over to a friend's place.
Other "minor" features will be included in tomorrow's v3.60 firmware update, but they have not yet been detailed. Stay tuned for more information.
UPDATE: To clarify, this feature will allow users to back up “copy-prohibited save data" in addition to regular save data.
Re: PS3 Firmware - downloading it manually
Glad there's a fix for the copy-prohibited game-saves now...
I lost a few good saves, because my PS3 couldn't backup the gamesave to put onto a new ps3...
Not a PS+ member so hopefully they let the rest use it soon... Probably be 20 or 50mb for normal users
